Bill PCB HHS 19-02 (HB 7117) was propelled by the Health and Human Services Committee of Florida with partisan support (12 - 5 Vote). Regarding medical marijuana, if enacted into law it would limit smokable marijuana dispensed at medical marijuana dispensaries to only 10% THC which was a major concern for some opponents. Florida would join a few other states, while the majority of states that legalized medical marijuana or made it recreational do not have those limits. Many popularized cannabis strains already being illicitly sold on the street exceed levels of 20% around the country. White Widow, as an example, has an average THC composition of 20%.
The Bill will also limit the high potency (10% limit included) of smokable marijuana to citizens under the age of 18 unless directly approved by two physicians, where one must be a board-certified physician. Those under the age of 18 will primarily be given low-THC cannabis. The bill also handles protections for the United States military veterans by waiving the $75 fee to obtain medical marijuana cards.
Public Thoughts
Supporters of the bill proposal believe that any smokable cannabis above 10% THC composition will increase the chances of adults being diagnosed with psychosis. Psychosis is defined as a symptom of a mental illness identified by radical changes in personality, impaired functioning, and a distorted sense of reality. Simply, people who experience hallucinogens, or delusions of reality.
