Former Broward County Sheriff, Scott Israel is suing Republican Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, for what he claims was a "political powerplay" that interferes with the public's election rights. DeSantis suspended Former Broward County Sheriff, Scott Israel, on January 11th days after DeSantis assumed office as Florida Governor. Scott Israel noted that Governor Ron DeSantis has failed to prove that the sheriff neglected his responsibilities during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Shooting. The shooting led to the tragic death of 17 people, most of them young students. The suspect, Nikolas, Cruz is currently in jail and facing further charges.
DeSantis claims that "... the massacre might never have happened had Broward had better leadership in the sheriff's department." Israel's lawsuit was filed with Broward County and acknowledges that Governor Ron DeSantis has the Constitutional authority to suspend a public official (as permitted in the Florida Constitution), however, they argue that his suspension was an abuse of power.
A hearing will be held on April 8th regarding the lawsuit.
